Catching Up On Old TV

I’m one of those people who derive great pleasure from discovering a new author who has an extensive backlist. So, you can imagine what it’s like for me to discover a T.V. show I missed the first time around and learn that there are 7 seasons on DVD just waiting for me to take advantage of Amazon.com’s ‘prime’ shipping.
I discovered Gilmore Girls by accident. While working on a book in which the heroine has a very close relationship to her mother, and a Korean best friend, a friend said to me, “Hey, you must have been a fan of the Gilmore Girls.” I replied that no, I hadn’t been. And then said friend told me just enough about the show (including the fact that she hadn’t been crazy about it and why) to whet my interest. I found the first season for a steal and started watching.
Friends, I am not ashamed to tell you that I fell in love. Oh sure, Lorelei sometimes makes me want to smack her, and Rory is too perfect to ever survive in the real world, but I love the quirky small town. I love the writing and the characters and the rhythm of the show.
And I’m only on season 2! There are 5 more to go!! Season 3 sits impatiently in its plastic wrap on my ‘to be watched’ pile and season 4 is already in my shopping cart. I want to know what happens to these characters and yet I don’t. See, I want Lorelei to finally get together with Luke — don’t tell me! — And I don’t want Rory and Dean to break up (but I know they must because I watch Supernatural and Jared Padalecki started on that show before GG’s went off the air). Can I tell you how glad I was when Chad Michael Murray’s character got shipped off to military school? I even waved good-bye at the screen as he made his exit, the little trouble maker.
Okay, so what’s the appeal? Aside from the fact that I don’t have to wait a week between episodes? My laundry has gone undone. Emails have gone unanswered (not for long, though), just so because I have Just-One-More-Episode-And-That’s-It-itis where Gilmore Girls are concerned. Those of you who watched the show, tell me why I’m so addicted. Is it the family interactions? Is it Luke’s scruffy jaw? Why do I feel so acutely for both Lorelei and her mother every time they rub each other raw?
And while you’re at it, why not tell me about shows you’ve recently discovered that other people raved about long before you jumped on the bandwagon. I’ve also discovered Kyle XY, but that’s a show for another day…

I discovered both 24 and Battlestar Galactica that way. I just love being able to sit down and watch an entire season commercial free.

As far as finally watching shows that I was told to watch..more or less ordered to watch by my two sons.. it’s Entourage..but not on DVD.. we got caught up on HBO ON Demand.
Other than that.. I’m reliving last year after purchasing “Moonlight-Season 1″ on DVD this past week. No “extras” ..but it’s nice to have it to watch on my TV instead of just my computer.
I also bought “The Shield” Season Six.. but still can’t really get into it.. just skip to the parts that Alex is in

I’m so glad you discovered the Gilmore Girls. I was “loony tunes” over that show. I found every single character in that show fasinating in their own way. I don’t know what it was, but it made you feel involved in these peoples lives.
The only show that I want to catch up with on DVD, is TRUE BLOOD. It’s on HBO and I’m not suscribed to that. I’ve read all the “Sookie Stackhouse” books, and I’m just itching to see what the show is like.

I actually discovered CSI that way a few years ago.
My husband recently discovered Smallville thanks to my sister, who has all the seasons released on DVD so far. He is slowly working his way through them and really enjoying the show.

Elizabeth, I’ve heard AMAZING things about Battlestar Galactica. It’s one that Steve I haven’t gotten into yet, but I sense it’s coming.
And Patricia, you are so right about GG. And you’re going to LOVE True Blood! It’s close enough to the books to make you really appreciate the attention to detail and character, but then different enough to keep you on your toes!
Andrea, we’ve watched Smallville from the beginning. Now that a certain LL isn’t on it this season I can finally enjoy it again!

Hi Kate – I tried to rent The Gilmore Girls recently, because I kept hearing great things about it, but somebody kept it from Blockbuster, and they didn’t have a copy. It’s still on my To-Get-Addicted-To list.
My current addiction is Dexter, and I finally got a hold of Season 3 episodes. I have up to episode 12, but I think there are more… not sure. I don’t want it to end.

Julianne, I love GG — I will send you mine sometime if you want.
And I love Dexter! I got Showtime just for that show.
