Looming over me was Verek. The last time we met on a beach he’d teased me and lost some clothes – a rather splendid sight. Right now, he looked grim.

“No more training tonight,” I told him warily. “I’m not up for it.”

Verek shook his head and squatted beside me. The muscles in his thighs bulged beneath the fine fabric covering them. “I’m here to serve summons on you, my lady.”

My lady? Usually he called me ‘Princess’ and only in the most mocking of tones. “That’s a little formal isn’t it?” I laughed. Verek didn’t. So I sat up. “Shit, Verek. What kind of summons?”

He sighed. “Tonight you will stand before the Nightmare council and face inquiry into your actions.”

My heart gave a thud. “My actions? What I have I done?”

He looked almost sympathetic. “The Warden was there when you brought Noah into our world, Dawn. You broke the rules and now you must stand before the counsel and explain yourself.”

Explain myself? Part of me wanted to tell him just what he could do with his summons – what the Warden could do for that matter. I hadn’t known when I brought Noah into the Dream Realm during our fight against Karatos that it was something I wasn’t allowed to do, never mind that it had been something I shouldn’t be able to do.

How could they punish me for doing something no one ever thought possible? But apparently it fell under some rule about not endangering humans. Please, I had been trying to save Noah, not hurt him.

“This is bullshit,” I told him. “The council is freaked out by me and is looking for a way to keep me under control.” I was daughter of the lord of this realm! Just who did this Warden person think he was?

“What if I refuse?” I asked.

Verek’s rugged features hardened. “Then I am to bring you back to the castle in shackles to await the proceedings.”

“My father won’t stand for that.”

Now he looked downright pitying. “It was your father who gave the order.”

Oh, damn.

I just love this gorgeous new cover of mine. When Seducing a Duke comes out on September 29th, so I figured this was the perfect time to do a little flaunting.

Greyden Kane, Duke of Ryeton and Rose Danvers have known each other for years. They’re not quite friends, not at all family and neither of them has admitted their longing for one another. Rose has come to London to find a husband, but before she weds there’s one thing she has to do. She has to seduce the duke. However, Grey thinks he’s the one doing the seducing when he spies the masked beauty at Saint’s Row. He has no idea who she is, but he know who he wants her to be. Imagine his surprise when he finally discovers that his newest lover is also his most enduring obsession.

Enchant. Tempt. Entice. Beguile. Just a few things a woman must do when seducing a duke . . .

*** In this scene, Grey has just been attacked in the upstairs hallway of the club at Saint’s Row whilst on his way to meet a mysterious masked lady***

Grey ducked and the man attached to the fist fell into the wall, a victim of his own momentum.

“Bastard,” the man spat from where the floor where he slid. “I’ll kill you.”

“Not tonight,” Grey remarked drily, straightening his cuffs. “Perhaps when you are sober you could give it another go, however.”

His assailant stared at him through bleery eyes. It wasn’t the first time Grey had been the victim of a surprise attack, but the last one happened some time ago and his reflexes were not what they ought to be. His heart hammered shamefully in his ribs. The arse had actually surprised him.

“Do I know you, sir?” He asked, wasting time studying the man’s familiar features when he should continue on to his lovely lady.

Spittle flew – intended for Grey but landing mostly on the man’s own chin and lapels. “You shagged my wife, you filthy bugger!”

Grey’s brows rose. A strange amusement filled him. “I’ll have you know I bathe regularly, sir.” He frowned. “Martingale? Is that you?”

The man huffed, tried to push himself upright and failed. “You know it is, you… you fuss bucket.”

He would laugh at the absurd term if he hadn’t realized the man had every reason to want to kill him. He had shagged Lady Martingale – many years ago. He’d shagged their daughter as well. Mother and daughter had gotten into a very public row over him at the theater one night. Bad form all around.

Grey offered the man his hand. “Let’s get you to a carriage. You should go home.”

Martingale slapped his hand away with a snarl. Somehow the man found enough strength in his alcohol saturated muscles to stand, though he had to cling to the wall to do so. “Go frig yourself.”

“Come now,” Grey said softly. “Let me assist you.” It was the least he could do given all the harm he’d cost. Of course Lord Martingale wasn’t a saint either. He’d been doing some burlesque dancer while Grey dallied with his women folk, but Martingale had been discrete and Grey… well, he’d never been known for such virtue.

Martingale shoved him, but it was the drunken earl who stumbled rather than Grey. “Sod off. Those men should have cut more than your face, you piss ant.”

“Yes,” Grey replied coolly. “But they didn’t. And you should have taken better care of your wife.”

The two of them stared at each other for a brief second, Grey still and composed, Martingale unsteady and filled with drunken anguish. And then, all the fight seemed to abandon the earl, leaving him deflated and bent. He turned and staggered down the corridor, leaning on the wall for support.

Grey watched him go with some regret. Of course he wouldn’t have welcomed further altercation, but perhaps spilling some of his blood would have given Martingale the satisfaction he wanted, granting Grey some atonement at the same time.

Instead, he was left feeling oddly empty. Perhaps he ought to leave. He hardly felt romantic at the moment. Still, it wouldn’t be gentlemanly of him to keep her waiting. He should at least apologize.

He turned and moved toward the room where she waited. The door opened just as he raised his fist to knock, and his lady stood there, gasping when she saw him.

Grey frowned when he saw the reticule in her gloved hand. “Were you leaving?”

“I was, yes,” came the cool reply with a lift of her round chin. “I do not appreciate being kept waiting, sir.”

Grey smiled, all thoughts of his own departure evaporating at the challenge she presented. He stepped over the threshold, forcing her to retreat into the room. “Anxious, my lady?”

The room was made for assignation. The wall paper was heavy and obviously costly. Huge bouquets of colorful Oriental flowers bloomed against the flat black backdrop. The plaster on the high ceiling was the same golden beige as the trim around the windows and door. Heavy drapes framed the window, designed to keep out all light or intrusion the city offered. The floor was walnut, polished and buffed to a high gloss shine, and accented with plush rugs in the same colors as the wallpaper. The bed – a massive four poster monstrosity – was hand-carved mahogany, covered in black bedding – with gold satin sheets turned down for the occupants.

Had waiting here, knowing what was going to happen between them when he arrived made her nervous? Had she sat on the edge of the bed squeezing her thighs together in a vain attempt to assuage the itch deep inside her?

“I was anxious,” she informed him more than a little haughtily. “Waiting has a way of cooling ardor.”

He laughed then, as he closed the door, sealing the two of them into the room. Was it just him, or had the temperature gone up several degrees?

“Do you reckon?” He stepped closer. “I’ve always found that the more I have to wait for something the more I want it.”

She stood her ground, but he sensed that she might bolt at any moment. They were so close their torsos were almost touching – hers rising rapidly with every breath. Grey’s entire body was tight, tingling. Dark eyes rose to meet his. “Then you must want me very badly, sir.”

There was no denying the spark of desire in her gaze. Golden flames seemed to burn in the chocolate depths, drawing him toward their heat as though he was nothing more than a powerless moth. “I do.” His voice was rough, but if her shiver was any indication she didn’t mind. “I want you very much.”

It’s no secret that Jenna Petersen and I are friends. Heck, I’ve often thought we were some kind of cosmic siamese twins! So when the opportunity to talk to her (however briefly) about silly stuff and her latest book HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT arose I grabbed it! I was lucky enough to read this book in it’s early stages and I immediately fell in love with the hero, Nicholas. One would think his life would be easy now that he’s a viscount, but the way he came to have the title weighs heavily on him, and there is one scene with the dowager viscountess that literally brought tears to my eyes. But enough about me! Go buy the book, and meanwhile, here’s my interview with Jenna…

KS: Your newest book, Her Notorious Viscount has a hero (Nicholas) who can kick serious butt. Is he based on anyone in particular?
JP: Well, I’m a huge UFC fan, so I think he’s a bit of a compilation of all my favorite fighters, but he ends up sort of just being his own person. Still, I think my love of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) influenced the story pretty heavily (and the dedication).

KS: Who is the most embarrassing celebrity crush you’ve ever had?
JP: Okay… deep breath. Donny from New Kids on the Block. There. It’s out.

KS: What comes first for you, character or plot?
JP: Generally, character and as that develops a skeletal plot can really get fleshed out. Once I know the way my characters will react, then the next actions sort of flow naturally.

KS: If Her Notorious Viscount was made into a movie, name three songs that would be on the soundtrack.
JP: It’s a historical… so probably it would be a bunch of classical music, honestly. I don’t write with music, so I never really think about songs that go with a book. Readers, what do you think?

KS: What is the one TV show you refuse to miss?
JP: I didn’t miss one episode of Battlestar Galactica, but now it’s off the air (pout). I’m big on Fringe right now, Lie to Me and I’m heavy into Amazing Race. Plus, we almost always get every UFC Pay-Per-View (see, I said I was a fan).

As an author of historical romance I strive to add as much historical detail in my books as I can. Some books get more detail than others, and sometimes an author needs to bend history to her will — just a little bit. It’s one of the hardest parts of writing historical romance, because an author owes her readers accuracy, but how much? Readers don’t really want to read about the diseases and the dirt, do they? I don’t. I don’t want to know that in the real 19th century my hero and heroine might not live to see 50, or that she might end up having so many children it wears her out. I want the fantasy.

And that’s where it gets tricky.

As an author you use your judgment and do the best research you can to make aspects of your novel come to live, and to perhaps make up for the parts that you really need to smudge to make the reading experience an enjoyable one. I have tons of books on 19th century England, Victorian morals and manners, and of course, clothing. But no amount of books about this time period can replace materials actually from that time period.

So, I thought I’d share with you the cover from one of my prized possessions — the May 1877 edition of Lady Godey’s Book. I managed to snag this one with the color fashion plate intact. It’s a little beat up, but I got it for a steal on ebay. It’s one of three original Victorian magazines I own, and includes such pleasers as:

Modes of Cook Eggs

Infant’s Knitted Boot

Sketches of Travel in Scotland by Horatio King

My Trials at Housekeeping by Rosalie Collins

Independent March (music composed and arranged for the piano-forte for Godey’s Lady’s Book)

Godey’s Fashions for May 1877

And much, much more! The type is so tiny I can’t imagine reading it by anything other than direct sunlight, although I’m certain my copy saw its fair share of lamp-light viewing. But it’s such a wonderful piece of Victorian life that it’s one of my most precious research tools, right down to the advertisement for “$12 a day at home. Agents wanted. Outfit and terms free. True & Co., Augusta Maine.” True & Co. was a publishing company. From what I gather they did a lot of prints, but to me this ad smacks of what we see today on the internet and in the back of modern magazines — ads looking for people to work from home with the promise of making big bucks hawking someone else’s wares.

I guess the more things change, the more they really do stay the same!

I’ve been blogging and talking a lot about vampires over the last couple of years. For the most part the blogs and conversations have been about my own vampires — The Brotherhood of the Blood. And while Temple, Reign, Saint, Bishop and Chapel certainly top the list of my favorite vamps, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share the love with a few of my other favorites.

Many of you have already heard me go on about how I saw Frank Langella play Dracula when I was 7. I’ve blathered incessantly about how he should have gotten the girl and how I hated the fact that he died, etc. For that reason, I’ve left him off this list. I knew you all would consider him a given. So here we go, in chronological order — my favorite vampires.

The first has to be this attractive purplish guy from the old abandoned mansion at the end of Seasame Street — The Count. So cool he has no name, just a title. He’s frostier than Fonzie, my friends. He had it all, the widow’s peak, the canines and the accent. He also had the charm and a head for numbers. What woman could resist a man who could croon such favorites as “Count Up to Nine”? He may have liked to count, but with that slicked back hair and impeccible wardrobe, we know what was really on his mind. This guy made vampires, organ music and wide collars accessible to children in a fun and non-threatening way.

Imagine my surprise when trying to find a photo of Dracula from the show Cliffhangers (1979!) and I discovered that it was the guy from Flashdance. See, I loved Michael Nouri as the iconic vampire living as a college prof in San Francisco, trying to recover his mortality and find a woman to grow old and die with, but in Flashdance — meh. Of course, I was still fairly young at this point so maybe I just didn’t get the appeal outside of the cape. Cliffhangers only ran for 10 episodes, but I used to beg my mother to let me stay up and watch the Dracula segment of the show. I remember that he had a double coffin to share with his lady love. Now that’s classy, I tell you.

There was a bit of a dry patch leading up to my teen years. George Hamilton’s Love at First Bite came out the same year as Cliffhangers, but I was too young to see it in theaters. I had to wait for video. I’m almost terrified to admit that I think I might have watched it in Beta format!! Anyway, the humorous vampire didn’t quite cut it for me in those days. But the mid to late 80s made up for that in a big way. In 1985 a little comic-horror movie called Fright Night was released. It was at this point in my vampire-appreciation that I realized I’m not a big fan of the face-changing vampire. I’ve always thought the scariest monsters were the ones that looked just like us. And I’ve never really got why a vamp’s face had to change anyway. Regardless, I was 14 and Fright Night introduced me to the concept of vampire sexuality. I still maintain that Christopher Sarandon in the Night Club scene is one of the most sexual vampires ever. And he does it in a turtleneck sweater. No cape and tux for this blood-sucker!

Fright Night was followed by Near Dark. Before he could fly on Heroes, Adrian Pasdar played a very cute farm boy named Caleb who fell into the hands of a vicious group of vampires all because of a girl. Bill Paxton was notably fabulous as a vampire. And Adrian was so fresh scrubbed and morally upright he couldn’t bring himself to feed. Ohh, a tormented vampire! Here was something even more appealing than the sexy and villainous vamp. My interest grew.

But quite probably, the most influential vampire flick of my teen-age years was Lost Boys. I even got the literary reference! I was sixteen and very much into hair bands, and then I was handed this glossy, gorgeous movie filled with pretty boys and girls, all of whom had amazing hair and acted around a fabulous soundtrack. I loved it so much I didn’t care that the ‘Coreys’ were in it. Jason Patrick was huge at the time, as was my home boy Keifer Sutherland. But it was one of the vampires in the background who caught my eye. Billy Wirth had the best hair hands down, and he was the quintessential sexy vampire in my 16 year-old mind. For those of you who don’t recognize Billy but saw the movie, he was the ‘death by stereo’ vampire. I’ve never forgiven Corey Haim for that moment. (As an aside, this also ties in with my Gilmore Girls post, as Edward Herrmann, who played Lorelei’s father in the show, also played ‘father’ to the Lost Boys, trying to bring Michael into the fold so his mother would have to follow.)

I’m sure there were other vampires throughout the 90’s, but the winner in my books has to be Angel. He was tortured to the point of needing a slap. A real reluctant vamp, my favorite moments were when he was forced into action, or when ‘Angelus’ came out and he did something really campy and nasty. Some of my favorite moments:

1. when Angel is possessed by a female ghost during the Sadie Hawkins dance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Buffy takes on the ghost of the male counterpart.

2. When Angel comes back from Hell (having been sent there by Buffy) and he’s all feral.

3. When he mentions having a ‘thing’ for nuns and convents on Angel and we later find out nuns were his equivilant to a Happy Meal.

4. Puppet Angel.

Angel was pretty close to the perfect vampire — big, sexy and scary. But he also could be very funny when he had to be, and the character had a wonderful old world naivete at times. I loved the line he said at a restaurant with his cohorts, “I’m not cheap, I’m just old!”

Since Buffy and Angel both went off air, I haven’t found much in the way of vampire love. I had high hopes for Moonlight, as Mick St. John was one of the more interesting vamps I’d seen in a long time. Still fairly young he retained much of his humanity — a trait that was sometimes as maddening as it was heartbreaking. This show had a lot of promise, particularly because it didn’t fall back on drama as conflict. In the final episode, instead of walking away from his lady love as he was being pushed to do, Mick turned around and came back. I loved that, and I really wish the network had given us a chance to see what came next.

Thankfully HBO has brought the Sookie Stackhouse books to the small screen. And while Erik is very big and alpha, it’s Stephen Moyer as Bill who had my attention through Season 1 of True Blood. Bill has just the right amount of tortured sensitivity and humanity left inside to make lovely conflict with the part of him that is unapologetic monster. I’m sure some of this love is because I’ve always been a sucker for dark hair, blue eyes and an impressive set of side-burns and I don’t care. True Blood has given me the vampire fix I’ve been waiting for and I can’t wait to sink my teeth (pun so very much intended) into Season 2!

So, if you’ve stuck around for the entirety of this post, you must have a liking for vampires too. Feel free to share your thoughts on the vampires I’ve listed, or better yet share some of your favorites!

I’m one of those people who derive great pleasure from discovering a new author who has an extensive backlist. So, you can imagine what it’s like for me to discover a T.V. show I missed the first time around and learn that there are 7 seasons on DVD just waiting for me to take advantage of Amazon.com’s ‘prime’ shipping.

I discovered Gilmore Girls by accident. While working on a book in which the heroine has a very close relationship to her mother, and a Korean best friend, a friend said to me, “Hey, you must have been a fan of the Gilmore Girls.” I replied that no, I hadn’t been. And then said friend told me just enough about the show (including the fact that she hadn’t been crazy about it and why) to whet my interest. I found the first season for a steal and started watching.

Friends, I am not ashamed to tell you that I fell in love. Oh sure, Lorelei sometimes makes me want to smack her, and Rory is too perfect to ever survive in the real world, but I love the quirky small town. I love the writing and the characters and the rhythm of the show.

And I’m only on season 2! There are 5 more to go!! Season 3 sits impatiently in its plastic wrap on my ‘to be watched’ pile and season 4 is already in my shopping cart. I want to know what happens to these characters and yet I don’t. See, I want Lorelei to finally get together with Luke — don’t tell me! — And I don’t want Rory and Dean to break up (but I know they must because I watch Supernatural and Jared Padalecki started on that show before GG’s went off the air). Can I tell you how glad I was when Chad Michael Murray’s character got shipped off to military school? I even waved good-bye at the screen as he made his exit, the little trouble maker.

Okay, so what’s the appeal? Aside from the fact that I don’t have to wait a week between episodes? My laundry has gone undone. Emails have gone unanswered (not for long, though), just so because I have Just-One-More-Episode-And-That’s-It-itis where Gilmore Girls are concerned. Those of you who watched the show, tell me why I’m so addicted. Is it the family interactions? Is it Luke’s scruffy jaw? Why do I feel so acutely for both Lorelei and her mother every time they rub each other raw?

And while you’re at it, why not tell me about shows you’ve recently discovered that other people raved about long before you jumped on the bandwagon. I’ve also discovered Kyle XY, but that’s a show for another day…
